European Capital of Culture 2016, a legacy of overcoming violence.

Capital for coexistence
The European Capital of Culture 2016 represents an enormous opportunity to turn the focus on culture and dialogue as the roads towards improved coexistence. It will also promote stronger ties with the rest of Europe and foster innovation in the cultural sector.

A participatory programme

The programme proposes a frame of artistic initiatives and cultural processes that have their origins in local community participation. The projects and initiatives invite new thought on the way we relate to ourselves, to society and to the environment.

A permanent legacy

The San Sebastian 2016 programme is designed to leave a specific legacy for the future: a local community with greater freedom, humanism and respect towards human rights, a more participatory society that learns to solve its conflicts through culture and the arts. San Sebastian aims to become a benchmark in the sphere of creative processes and culture.

A new way of working

The project has a special impact in the areas that inspire knowledge and use of technology (Hirikia), promote mediation in creative processes (Hazitegiak), prompt linguistic diversity (284+), facilitate citizen empowerment and participation (Bestelab), and cultivate critical thought by means of contemporary art (Pagadi).
