Lertxundi places Cercas, Darrieussecq and Zelik in the skin of writers in languages with an uncertain future

The “Demagun ehun urte barru” meetings are the result of the carte blanche that San Sebastian 2016 has given Anjel Lertxundi.

On 12 and 13 December, European authors and translators will reflect on literature created in non-hegemonic languages.

Javier Cercas, Marie Darrieussecq and Raul Zelik have accepted Lertxundi’s challenge. In this exercise of empathy they will be accompanied by translators Karlos Cid, Adan Kovacsics and Miguel Sáez.


Forsythe and Ikeda participate in San Sebastian 2016 with two installations

Jone San Martin closes her carte blanche with two internationally renowned artist: the American choreographer William Forsythe  and Japanese electronic music composer Ryoji Ikeda.

Both works invite the public to concentrate on their body's movement through the space.

The installations are now open through November 27th in Tabakalera's Space 1.


'Corners' rolls out in Amara with exhibitions, performances, shows and guided tours

From 28 September to 1 October, 11 projects will be presented involving nearly thirty artists from the Corners of Europe cultural platform.

The initiative falls within San Sebastian 2016 European Capital of Culture’s Hazitegiak quay.

The projects have been co-created and adapted for San Sebastian together with agents and neighbours from the Amara neighbourhood.


San Sebastian 2016 hosts the contemporary art from the edges of Europe

The Corners of Europe project will offer art installations, exhibitions, performances, shows and guided tours devised by around thirty international artists

Most of the project will run between 28 September and 2 October, but there will be three prior events taking place on 19 September ("Hide or Reveal", an installation on the No. 26 bus route) , 20 September (the official opening of the "Put Yourself in My Place") and 21 September ("In Between" exhibitions at the Ernest Lluch Centre and Anoeta underground station respectively).

The programme's activities will focus on different parts of Amara.


San Sebastian 2016, following Hitchcock's footsteps

The photographic exhibition Welcome Mr. Hitchcock retraces the master of suspense’s trip through the Basque Country in July 1958.

The 2016 Space will host the exhibition, which has been curated by the photographer Pedro Usabiaga and includes around a hundred images that have mostly never been seen before.


San Sebastian 2016 and Artium present the exhibition ‘1989. After the Conversations of Algiers. Delirium and Truce’

This exhibition, curated by Carles Guerra and part of the 'Peace Treaty' project, presents the effects of terrorism on art between 1987 and the "definitive cessation of armed activity" by ETA in 2011.

The exhibition can be visited until 1 November in the North Hall at the Artium Museum in Vitoria-Gasteiz and it will later be transferred to the Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona from 11 November to 15 January.

The exhibition will open next Thursday at 20:00. Before that, at 19:00, Carlos Guerra will give a talk.


The magic of the Ana Desetnica festival will take over Zurriola bridge

The fourth and last Zubideak is dedicated to street theatre and the guest festival will be Ana Desetnica from Ljubljana

Nine international performances and a local one that range from street parades to vertical dancing, including puppet theatre, clown or large-scale street theatre, make up the agenda for 31 July.

In addition to the performances, the extensive schedule of Zubideak. Ljubljana will be completed with workshops and games.


San Sebastian 2016 goes inside the largest gypsy ghetto in Europe

The travelling embassy Europa Transit is in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) filming its eighth documentary.

Ten cities facing different challenges are the scenarios of ten documentaries that Europa Transit is filming to promote San Sebastian 2016's motto "Culture to live together".


Europa Transit arrives in Paphos to explore the past and present of Cyprus through improvised verse singing

Acknowledged Basque verse improviser Amets Arzallus stars in the documentary that is being filmed in the divided country, which has a tradition of impromptu oral poetry.

Paphos, upcoming European Capital of Culture in 2017, is the seventh destination on the route of  San Sebastian 2016's Europa Transit itinerant embassy.


‘Zubideak’ brings Europe’s most prestigious dance festival to San Sebastian

Two months before the Biennale de la danse takes place in Lyon (France), San Sebastian will be hosting a preview of this major European festival on 3 July.

The event will run from 11:00am to 9:00pm and is split between Okendo square and Cataluña square.

Over the course of the festival, audiences will be able to enjoy performances by international artists such as Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger and Basque companies including Lasala.
