Final thoughts on the biodiversity route

Over the course of this journey we've run into many people who are lending a hand and doing their bit to prevent climate change.

Pauline, the farmer of the future

Today we woke up early to cover the 5km to Pauline's farm so she could charm us with her philosophy on life: they don't want a larger farm so that other farmers can live the same way. They have never used pesticides or fertilisers so they can offer healthier products to their customers, and avoid poisoning their land and the land of their neighbours. They sell all of their products directly from their greenhouses or at the nearest town of Rostrenen's weekly market to cut out the CO2 emissions produced by transport.

Surprises from Bath

Bath proved to be a very special town in our trip through the United KingdomWe were greeted by Iñaki Azpiazu, who is originally from San Sebastian and is now a member of the Euskal Etxea in Bristol. Iñaki studied in Bath and it is where he met Emma, who is now his wife. He took us to eat at his house, which was where we also met his newborn daughter and his parents, who were there on holiday.

Darwin: The “father” of evolutionism

The English are known for their great discoverers, scientists, geologists, geographers… they have explored and mapped half the world. Among all of them, one naturalist stands out for his revolutionary and forward-thinking vision. At a time when almost everybody believed that species were created by God exactly as they exist, he claimed and proved that living beings are the result of evolution, from the subsequent "natural selection" of adaptations passed down through our ancestors.

New ways of looking at agriculture

After a good dinner at El Burladero in Pamplona, Mikel Elizalde asked me about our journey. I told him about our route and how we would be exploring biodiversity. "Well, I have a friend in Rotterdam who is a biologist and he's working as a researcher," he told me. Everything just snowballed from there: emails were exchanged, calls were made before the trip… Along the way, a speedboat took us from Dordrecht to Rotterdam at lightning speed to interview Iñaki Azcona under the huge Erasmus Bridge.

Wetsus, Holland

We arrived in Leeuwarden, 2018 European Capital of Culture, where we had a meeting with Jelle Burgraaff. There we were impressed by a beautiful building, covered with strips of wood hung and placed in a way that allowed for greater energy efficiency, letting light in while avoiding the direct action of the sun on windows.

Industrial hemp

Upon our arrival in Holland we are met by an enormous industrial hemp plantation. Hemp is a plant similar to marijuana but with a lower THC content and which is higher in CBD. A few metres further along we come across a large factory called Dun Agro, which manufactures various products using industrial hemp as the raw material.

Direct sales in Germany

One of the biggest problems that farmers face is their low profit margins. Prices, which are normally fixed by canneries and wholesale greengrocers, have a direct impact on them.

Pedalling Biodiversity

We're going to take a bike trip from Copenhagen to San Sebastian to talk about biodiversity. The other day, Lur Epelde, who is one of the people we'll interview, told me: "There are more microorganisms (fungi and bacteria) in a spoonful of earth than there are people on the planet".
